How we work with you
Philanthropy without Borders partners with nonprofits like yours to create authentic and engaging travel experiences that connect your volunteers to your organization’s mission – wherever that mission takes place. As professional fundraisers, we know that the great work of your organization cannot be sustained without the support from your closest donors, and that nothing is more powerful than seeing the mission first-hand. Through fundraising strategy, travel facilitation, and cross-cultural training, we provide transformative adventures for your volunteer that instill deeper commitments and inspire lifelong connections. We believe in the power of learning by experience. Thus, the more volunteers learn, the more confident they are in investing in your mission.
Three levels of service to meet your needs
To meet your needs and achieve your goals we offer three distinctly customizable packages. Whether you are a team of three or three-hundred, whether you have projects in one country or ten countries, we can elevate your volunteer travel initiatives so that you can sustain your vital work for years to come.
Elevate your international work with a robust and highly effective volunteer program. Our assessment ensures that you build a scalable and sustainable program from the beginning. Make informed and evidence-based decisions on the potential investment and revenue for implementing an international volunteer program.
Program Assessment – We conduct a deep-dive with your program team to determine which elements of your work can be implemented by volunteers and what types of volunteers are needed.
Internal Structure Assessment – We examine your internal capacity (time, resources, buy-in and support) to determine what processes and systems are needed to implement a successful volunteer program.
Return-on-Investment (ROI) – We measure the ROI by developing a detailed budget for the program and assessing the in-kind value volunteers bring to the mission. This, along with other key metrics, will determine the cost and benefit of the program going forward, and provide tools to monitor and evaluate its effectiveness.

We help get your volunteer program off the ground by putting systems in place for recruiting, screening, on-boarding, preparing, and retaining volunteers. Once you get back from your first field assignment, we do an in-depth evaluation so that you can make informed decisions for future travel.

Recruiting – We work with you to select the right participants for the trip, and to prepare them every step of the way. Together, we’ll determine effective recruiting methods and ways to market the program to broader audiences so that you can attract talent that matches your needs.
Screening – Our screening process is both effective and efficient – designed to identify the right people for the program and filter those who are not a match. We also provide interview questions and screening assessments needed to hone in on those key individuals.
On-boarding – Once participants are selected, you want to make sure you solidify their commitment by orienting them to your organization and programmatic work. We provide templates and processes for effective on-boarding and orientation.
Preparing – Before your volunteer’s first field assignment, we provide a country-specific pre-departure guidebook to inform traveler planning and preparation. We also administer the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) to all participants to reveal individual competences and limitations essential for working with human difference. The Pre-departure orientation will cover the specifics of a trip, set accurate expectations, and engage participants with interactive activities and exercises to put the new concepts to use immediately.
Retaining – Once the trip is over, we advise on the structure needed to continue cultivating the volunteer relationship, and to leverage the trip through marketing and communications. Your volunteers can make great storytellers and advocates if you empower them to share their experience with others!

We implement your volunteer travel program from start to finish, including travel design, planning, and logistics coordination. Once you get back from your first field assignment, we do an in-depth evaluation so that you can make informed decisions for future travel.
Travel Design and Coordination
Itinerary Design—In partnership with your project implementation team, we work to develop a mission-centric itinerary that showcases your impact and leverages the skills and abilities of your volunteers. If you are working with vulnerable populations, our thoughtful approach will preserve the dignity of your beneficiaries, while cultivating empathy and deeper understanding in your volunteers.
Logistics Coordination—In partnership with a network of international vendors, tour operators, and resource experts, we coordinate every logistical element involved in a volunteer trip, from transportation to accommodations, visas to vaccinations. Save yourself and your team the stress of dealing with the minutia and let the us deal with the logistics.
Debrief—After your team returns from the field, we conduct an in-depth debrief on the volunteer trip to inform future decisions.
Post-Travel Evaluation—This thorough assessment includes the final expenses and revenue, key successes, lessons learned, recommendations for future trips, and a longterm retention plan. The evaluation builds internal capacity on your team, so that you can make the most of this trip and ensure the success of future trips.
